Posted below is a photo of an ancient mosaic depicting a Christian being martyred by means of being fed to a wild beast. Please take a moment to study the picture, then answer the multiple choice questions below.
Question 1: Why did this Christian die in this manner?
A) His pastor failed to teach him how to pray Sun Stand Still prayers.
B) He didn't have an audacious enough faith.
C) He confessed that Jesus Christ is LORD alone and refused to recant his faith in Christ and Him Crucified for the forgiveness of sins.
Question 2: What could this Christian have done to avert his untimely demise?
A) Learn how to pray Sun Stand Still prayers.
B) Learn how to have an audacious faith and thereby discover God's "Big Vision" for his life.
C) Deny Christ
Question 3: The fact that this Christian died in this manner proves...
A) That his pastor/life coach failed to teach him how to believe in God for the impossible.
B) That he never had enough faith to see God's Big Vision for his life come to pass.
C) That Jesus was right when He said that the world would hate Christians because the world hated Him. (John 15:18-21)
Question 4: The Romans persecuted and killed Christians because...
A) Christians were telling everyone how to pray Sun Stand Still prayers.
B) The Romans suffered from "Vision Envy" because God kept giving bigger and better life visions to the Christians and the Romans weren't getting any good visions from their gods.
C) Because Christians refused to worship other gods and claimed that Jesus was the one true God in human flesh and that salvation was to be found by repentance and faith in Jesus alone for the forgiveness of sins.
Final Question: Was there something wrong with this Christian's faith?
A) Yes. The fact that he was martyred this way proves that he didn't have an audacious enough faith to trust God for the impossible.
B) Obviously there was something wrong with his faith. If he had trusted God to reveal a "Big Vision" for his life then he would have been able to change the world rather than have his life cut short.
C) Not at all. Hebrews 11 teaches that by faith many people saw God do the impossible but that many others by their faith in Christ "were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— of whom the world was not worthy” (Hebrews 11:35–38)
Answer Key. The answer to every question was C. If you answered A or B on any question then you need to throw away your copy of Steven Furtick's book and read your Bible.
